Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip in Ireland?
Tipping in Ireland is appreciated but not as institutional as in the US. Common Irish norms: 10–12.5% in sit-down restaurants, round up the fare in taxis, €1–2 per drink in bars (often optional). For exceptional service, more is welcome.
Is service charge included in Irish bills?
Sometimes — many Irish restaurants add a 10–15% service charge automatically for groups of 6+ or in tourist-heavy areas. Always check the bill: if a service charge is listed, you don't need to add a separate tip unless you'd like to give more.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Conventionally, tip on the post-tax (gross) total in Ireland. The difference is small at 23% VAT but adds up over many meals. If you're being precise, tipping on net is also fine.
How do I split a bill evenly?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. Use the calculator's split slider — it does this automatically. For uneven splits, calculate each person's share separately and add a per-person tip.
Should I tip for takeaway in Ireland?
Generally no — takeaway tipping isn't expected in Ireland. Some people round up or leave loose change in a tip jar but it's entirely optional and far less common than for sit-down service.
